Two organizations can buy identical FortiGates and end up with very different security. The difference is almost always the deployment.
Fortinet hardware ships with enormous capability. How much of it gets used, and how well, depends on the engineers who design the policy, size the platform, and run the cutover. Choosing the partner deserves the same scrutiny as choosing the product.
Use this checklist before you commit.
1. Program Standing and Specializations
Fortinet's Engage Partner Program recognizes partners at different levels and awards Partner Specializations in specific technology areas. Specializations require the partner to meet Fortinet's criteria in that area, including trained and certified staff.
Ask:
- What is your Engage program level?
- Which Partner Specializations do you hold, and do they match the technologies in this project?
- Do you hold any service designations, such as support or professional services programs?
A partner specialized in firewalls may not bring the same depth to OT, SASE, or security operations. Match the specializations to your project scope.
2. Engineering Depth
Credentials on the partner's website mean little if the engineers assigned to your project don't hold them.
Ask:
- Which engineers will work on this project, and what Fortinet certifications do they hold?
- Who designs the architecture, and who implements it? Are they the same team?
- Has the team deployed this specific combination of products before?
3. Relevant Deployment Experience
Experience in your sector and at your scale matters more than a long client list.
Ask:
- What similar projects have you delivered, in terms of scale, sector, and technology?
- Can you provide references we can speak with directly?
- What went wrong on a past project, and how did you handle it?
The last question tells you more than any case study.
4. Design and Sizing Methodology
A good partner sizes from data and documents the design before touching hardware.
Ask:
- How will you size the platform? What traffic data will you collect?
- Will we receive a written high-level and low-level design before implementation?
- Can you run a proof of concept with our traffic and our policy requirements?
Be cautious of a partner who recommends a model without asking about your traffic.
5. Migration and Cutover Approach
Most security projects replace something already in production. The migration plan decides whether users notice.
Ask:
- How will you migrate existing firewall policies? Will you clean them up or copy them across?
- What is the cutover plan, and what is the rollback plan?
- How do you test before go-live, and who signs off?
6. Regulatory Knowledge
For organizations in Saudi Arabia, the deployment has to support compliance, not just security.
Ask:
- How will the design support our NCA ECC obligations, and SAMA or OTCC requirements where they apply?
- How do you handle data residency and PDPL considerations in SASE, cloud, and logging designs?
- Can you produce documentation that supports our audits?
7. Local Presence and Support
A partner's value continues long after go-live.
Ask:
- Where are your engineers based, and how quickly can they reach our sites?
- What support tiers do you offer after deployment, and what are the response commitments?
- How do you handle escalation to Fortinet when an issue needs vendor involvement?
- Can you manage the platform on an ongoing basis if we need it?
8. Knowledge Transfer
Your team will run the platform day to day. The partner should leave them able to do it.
Ask:
- Will our team receive handover training and documentation?
- Will we have full administrative access and ownership of all configurations and licenses?
The Bottom Line
Treat partner selection as part of the security architecture. The right partner holds specializations that match your project, puts certified engineers on it, sizes from data, migrates without disruption, and stays accountable after go-live.
IT Builders is an authorized Fortinet Engage Partner holding Partner Specializations across all seven areas: Secure Networking: Firewall, Secure Networking: LAN, SD-WAN, SASE, Security Operations, Cloud Security, and Operational Technology, along with the Engage Tech Support Partner and Engage Preferred Services Partner designations. With more than 250 clients and a team of more than 50 across Saudi Arabia and Egypt, we're ready to answer every question on this list.
